Learned Helplessness is a new concept I learned recently from my good buddy, Mental Matt, over on Twitter.
It’s an important concept we need to learn as a society to help develop compassion and understanding for those around us.
Many people struggle today, and judging and criticizing is easy without understanding how we get stuck in bad situations.
Let’s dig in.
What’s Happening in Today’s Episode
Learned Helplessness is a concept based on the work of Martin Seligman from the 1970s. Much progress has been made since the original studies were completed. We know so much about habits, change, and our brains.
All of this influences our daily experience; if we’re unaware, things in our minds can rule our lives regardless of what we try. Learned Helplessness is one of those powerful things to learn that can help us transform our lives.
It’s helpful to understand why we get stuck in bad situations, even when change is possible.
Here is a quick highlight of the main topics discussed:
Introduction to the idea of Learned Helplessness
Definition and history of LE
Signs and symptoms of LE
Change strategies
Connection to the bigger picture
Conclusion
Understanding Learned Helplessness can help us to become more compassionate and empowered individuals who uplift those around us instead of criticizing and judging them for not meeting specific societal standards.
Compassion and empathy lift us out of the darkness.
